Jean de La Fontaine introduced talking animals to the world literature in mid 17th century. Talking animals is a thing in literature, movies, and games ever since. As a matter of fact, I got 20 great video games where you can talk to animals.
In some games, you’re a human who can talk to animals via pet pal, and animal taking perks. Or simply by being a druid. There are also games where you’re the animal who can talk to other animals.
Let’s start the list of games with anthropomorphic (Animals with human mannerism, also look like human hybrids.) animals and normal animals that can talk!
1. Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best fantasy RPG release of the past few years. It’s set in a very magical world where you can do many impossible things, including talking with animals.
Speak with animals spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be learned via divination school. Bard, druid, ranger, warlock, barbarian, paladin, and cleric can learn it. Although you can cast it via potions and scrolls as well.
It’s very fun and also very useful to have. You really don’t want the miss the unique dialogues of animals in Baldur’s Gate 3.
2. Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2
Divinity Original Sin is the game series that introduced animal talking (pet pal) to me in gaming and I quickly fell in love with it.
You can access to many unique quests, unravel mysteries, and find hidden treasures by discussing with the animals in both Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2. Their unique personalities and wisdom are worth delving into.
The game is very enjoyable as it is, but trust me, pet pal talent takes it to the next level.

FF 9 is hands down the best of old classic JRPGs. You’ll definitely love it even if you don’t like JRPGs in general.
Final Fantasy IX (9) is the only singleplayer FF game with a majority non-human cast. It’s filled with anthropomorphic animals. That’s why it’s a true fantasy.

The game has many choices to make and mysteries to solve. You won’t be able to save everyone, not even yourself perhaps.
You can speak with animals in this game by unlocking the talk to animals trait. For me it’s the most fun trait pick.
