Looking to play HOI4 but can’t enjoy the game because you are a newbie? The truth is, Hearts of Iron IV is hard and complex game. It takes some time to learn. That is why via this article am sharing the list of HOI4 easy countries.
With easy HOI4 nations you can learn and experiment the game without being capitulated.
You can also lower the game difficulty in the country selection screen. HOI4 have 5 difficulty level:
- Civilian
- Recruit
- Regular (Default.)
- Veteran
- Elite
But I don’t recommend lowering the game difficulty unless it is absolutely necessary. Because the AI is already dumb and lowering difficulty blocks the achievements. HOI4 more than one autosave trick is probably the best advice I can give to the beginners. Anyway, let us start the HOI4 easy countries list:
1. United States
Easiest country in HOI4 would be the United States. Because no one can invade your lands. Also check out HOI4 USA mods.
USA hosts the biggest naval force and unlimited oil to supply them. This force and the amazing industrial potential makes the United States easiest country to play. Besides USA lands contains tons of natural resources.
You can just build up your industry, air force, navy, and army until you decide to interfere WW2.
2. Italy
Did you know about the HOI4 in-game tutorial? Italy is used in the tutorial and it is a great nation to play for beginners. You really don’t need to anything, your ally in Axis the German Reich will do everything for you.
Since Italy have decent navy, it is a good pick for learning naval warfare. Just make sure to back your navy up with a decent air force. You need not to focus on army because German Reich have enough for both of you. As Italy, I always focus on air forces.
3. German Reich
Another great nation for beginners is German Reich. Just don’t expect to win in your first playthrough.
Thanks to the MEFO bills and 4 year plan, German Reich can build the strongest war industry before the start of WW2. No one can really stop you except Soviet Union + USA forces combined. Which is easily avoidable by choosing the right focus trees.
All in all, German Reich is a great nation to learn land warfare in HOI4 and highly recommended for beginners. Besides German Reich is the main antagonist and have the most content / flavor.
4. Dominion of Canada
Let’s continue with an another uninvadable country, the Dominion of Canada.
Canada is easy to play because you can develop your country freely. Once USA joins the war, you can start the Normandy landing together. Of course until then, Canada can simply join the air warfare in the Europe. It is a great chance to learn air battle mechanics in HOI4.
Dominion of Canada is a member of Allies but you don’t have to commit that path. It is possible to go fascist or communist Canada via focus tree. Teaming up with Mexico to destroy USA offers an interesting playthrough.
5. Mexico
Mexico is just another country in a super safe position. Plus it is neutral to the WW2.
Player can simply sit around and learn the game-mechanics without stress. Then simply join the winning faction during the late game for fun. Custom Mexico focus tree allows you to flex a lot.
6. Australia
Another great Allies nation for the new players looking for easy countries in HOI4 would be the Australia. You can participate the war without anyone attacking you.
Pros:
- Literally uninvadable position.
- Member of the Allies.
- Custom focus tree.
- Strong military advisors.
Cons:
- Weak army, air force, and navy.
- Small industry.
7. Portugal
Portugal is also an easy European country because no one attacks you. Its focus tree is really fun too. You can unite Iberia or restore the Brazilian crown. Joining Allies is also another option but rather bland.
Even though it is relatively small nation, it offers lots of option. Don’t be hesitate to pick Portugal. So that you can both learn and have fun.
8. South Africa
South Africa is in the perfect spot for learning the game. Because thanks to your position no one can attack you and you can contribute to the warfare.
Drive Axis forces out of Africa while learning about the HOI4 supply system. Africa have really low supply, rail roads, and infrastructure. However, German Reich does not bother with African lands either.
9. Turkey
Turkey is a country that remained its neutrality during the World War 2. Therefore making it a great country to learn basic Hearts of Iron 4 mechanics. Once you get the grip, you can join a faction via focus tree and start learning the warfare part of the game.

10. United Kingdom
United Kingdom is really an easy major nation to pick in HOI4. Not in HOI4 but in other paradox games too. Why is that? United Kingdom is an island nation that focused on the navy since the old times. That is why the mainland is very safe and easy to defend.

Of course, your main enemy German Reich is very strong. However, it cannot invade you and you have many allies. Once Soviet Union and United States joins the war, it is already over for German Reich. Also, you can always use HOI4 UK mods to add more spice and flavor.
