Welcome to the Imperator Rome legion unit guide. On this guide I’ll briefly explain the best cohort legion compositions and tactics that’ll win you decisive field battles.

First things first, it’s all about stacking bonuses. Look at your capital surplus, nation bonuses, and army traditions to see your battle modifiers. Then optimize accordingly.

Roman traditions are all about boosting heavy infantry, the legendary legions of the Roman Army. Therefore, as Rome you should have lots of heavy infantry in your legion compositions and some cavalry for flanking and chasing.

As for Carthage, Punic Traditions give bonus to Elephants and Numidian Traditions gives lots of light cavalry bonus. Therefore, you should mainly focus on these units when making your legion composition. Also threw few infantry units in there just to be able to assault forts.

Finally, Greeks. They have many light infantry, heavy infantry, and heavy cavalry bonuses. No single unit stands above the others. So, mixed legion composition is optimal for Greek tradition. Since non-legion levies are mainly consist of light infantry, Greeks field the strongest basic levies in the game thanks to their light infantry bonuses. Hoplites all the way!

Let’s be more specific. I make sure every 2k of 10k cohort unit is made of horses to flank the enemies.

Again, each 10k cohort unit must have at least 2k engineers to be able to tear down forts with ease.

Try not to employ legions / cohorts via Italia region as Rome because it’s capital region. Levies in capital region can sack cities because they’re led by the consul. Wish we could assign our consul as the leader of legions…

Most optimal way: Sack cities with capital region levies, tear down forts with cohorts from your other regions.
