Spore introduced evolution to gaming. Not sure if there were any other evolution game before Spore, but we know for sure Spore is the first mainstream one. That begs the question, are there any other evolution games like Spore? The answer is yes. There are many evolution games just like the Spore. As a matter of fact, I’ve shared 12 evolution games right on this page.
RELAXING GAMES < Similar genre.
Evolution games are pretty popular because they are fun, casual, and educational. Because of these facts, evolution genre games appeal to all age groups.
I still play Spore. However, its graphics are kinda outdated in this day and age. Therefore, I seek for newer games that are just like Spore.
1. Thrive
Thrive is an organism evolution simulation. You start as a single microbe, then control colony of evolved microbes bound together.
Basically, it’s the advanced version of Spore’s cell phase. So, as a fan of Spore’s cell stage, I love and recommend Thrive to everyone!
Best thing about Thrive is its realism. You learn about biology by using real compounds, organelles or parts directly taken from real science.
2. Fl0w
Let’s continue with another cell stage evolution game called Flow or Fl0w. The game takes you to a hypnotic, deep blue abyss where bioluminescent creatures swim. As one of them, you get to explore, evolve, and try to survive!
This game is available on PS3, PS4, PSVITA, and PC. However, PC version is really different from the PlayStation ones. PC version is a little worse but also free to play.
3. The Eternal Cylinder
The Eternal Cylinder is another evolution game inspired by the Spore. It’s featuring the creature phase.
In the game, you control a herd of charming creatures called Trebhum. You’ll explore, discover mutations, evolve, and survive in the dangerous alien planet.
If you’ve liked the second act of Spore, the creature stage, you’ll love The Eternal Cylinder.
4. Elysian Eclipse
Elysian Eclipse is literally the closest game to Spore you can ever play. I call it the spiritual successor of Spore. Because the gameplay is divided into multiple stages of evolution. Such as cell, aquatic, creature, tribal, medieval, civilization, and space stages. As you can see, it has more evolution stages than Spore.
The game is not available on Steam yet because it’s in the alpha stage. However, you can download it from Itch.io and play right away for free. But I bet it’ll be a paid game once the game is fully released.
5. Cell to Singularity
Cell to Singularity explores the story of evolution, technology, humanity, and dinosaurs. You literally experience universe from beginning to the very end.
By the way, Cell to Singularity – Evolution Never Ends is completely free to play.
GOD GAMES < Same genre.
All in all, I recommend Cell to Singularity to anyone wants to play evolution game. The details and science part of the game makes it worth playing.
6. The Sapling
The Sapling is a unique evolution / simulation game that’s not very similar to Spore in terms of gameplay to be honest. But the concept is the same.
This is a game where you design your own plants and animals, then put them in a world together. After that, you either micro-manage them or turn-on the random mutation setting and watch your creation grow like a God.
Playing The Sapling is almost like owning a terrarium!
7. Adapt
Guide your species through an ever-changing world! That’s video game Adapt for you ladies and gentlemen. It’s a game that is featuring the creature stage of Spore.
As you already know, the nature is really harsh. And Adapt perfect captures that. You must adapt, compete, and evolve in such way so that you and your offspring survive.
8. Niche
Nice is a pretty niche game about evolution. Ha ha. No im not kidding, Niche is a genetics survival game mixed with turn-based strategy and simulation elements. In essence, many genres mixed in Niche. About the result? It’s absolutely brilliant!
You shape your own species based on real animal genetics and make them survive against all odds. Such as predators, climate change, spreading sickness, and hunger.
9. Cellings
Celling is a sandbox game taking place in an abstract procedural world full of various species. Guess what? You’re one of them.
The game features the full evolution of cells across 3 generations. You will explore, compete, evolve, and try to survive!
10. Microcosmum
I love cell stage the most in Spore. That’s why I also like Microcosmum because is one of the best cell evolution games. So, how does Microcosmum: survival of cells works?
You start as a small organism and do whatever necessary to survive. That’s nature.
The gameplay is artistic, classy, and relaxing. Overall, Microcosmum is awesome.
11. Eufloria
Eufloria is an addictive ambient strategy game. Oh sorry, not only a game, but also an art piece.
The game features space exploration, conquest, plant growth and bio mechanical evolution. Everything you need from an evolution game is in Eufloria.
You can play 25 level story mode for a challenge or the relaxed mode for chilling. Both are great.
12. Plague Inc.
This one is a bit different. Plague Inc. features the evolution of a virus that’s determined to wipe out humanity off the planet.
Plague types:
- Bacteria
- Virus
- Fungus
- Neurax Worm
- Parasite
Most start with small symptoms like coughing, sweating, sneezing, etc. then symptoms get worse as the virus or bacteria evolves.
The concept of Plague Inc is pretty depressing but believe me, gameplay is super fun, especially in co-op.
