10 movie & TV Series recommendations that are close to CK3 gameplay and setting.

crusader kings movies

Hello fellow Crusader Kings 3 fans. I got 10 movies & TV series that are reflecting the medieval era, court life, wars, religion, feudalism, and even the innovations of Crusader Kings 3. In truth, CK3 is a historical role-playing game. You create your own saga in it. For Crusader Kings 3 fans, watching those sagas in Movies & TV Series is definitely a blast!

Crusader Kings 3 cover large history. Such as Crusades, Viking Age, Reconquista, Mongol Invasion, post Charlemagne Europe, and Holy Roman Empire. There are many productions to watch covering the same topics. And we’re about to get into that!

I tried not to include any fantasy media to this list such as Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Dune, Beowulf, et.c even though they’re similar to Crusader Kings 3. I mean, anyone who’s into intrigue style gameplay will enjoy Game of Thrones. But on this list, I’ve sticked to more historical media.

1. Vikings

IMDB

The Vikings is an absolutely amazing Tv series that is based on the saga of Ragnar Lodbrok, his sons, and other Vikings who conquered, raided, and adventured various parts of world.

Watch an episode or two and you can’t stop the urge to play as an Asatru Viking in 867.

There are many events in CK3 directly taken from the TV series Vikings. I’m %100 sure that the Swedish developers of CK3 are fan of Vikings series.

After watching in you’ll also notice a lot of characters in CK3.

The TV series is sponsored by History channel but it’s not a documentary. A real deal TV show with high entertainment value.

All in all, if you’re a Crusader Kings 3 fan, you’re in for a treat!

2. Kingdom of Heaven

IMDB

Kingdom of Heaven is all about the events leading to the Third Crusade. Every time I watch this move, I get this urge to play as a Crusader King of Jerusalem!

You’ll see many Nobles from Medieval Europe, Holy Orders, Sultan, and the diplomacy and struggle of that era.

Watch the extended edition if you haven’t already. Uncut version is much better.

After watching Kingdom of Heaven, you’ll want to win a crusade against Jerusalem and decide to play as your beneficiary after conquest. Then you can create the formable nation Outremer. If you manage to survive against your neighbors of course!

3. Tudors

IMDB

TV series The Tudors is all about court life of 1491 – 1547 medieval England. Basically, the story of King Henry VIII.

Henry is known for his radical changes to the English Constitution, separating the Church of England from papal authority, his tyranny, and his lustful nature! That’s basically us in Crusader Kings 3.

By the way, all characters in this show are like supermodels. Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Henry Cavill carry the show. Music artist Joss Stone was also in Tudors for 5 episodes.

4. El Cid Movie & Series

TV Series IMDB

Movie IMDB

You can watch both Amazon Prime’s 2020 – 2021 El Cid series or the cult classic El Cid movie of 1961.

El Cid was one of the most important figures of the Iberian struggle and Reconquista. He is in fact is a commander / knight in Crusader Kings 3 with extraordinary abilities.

You can’t choose to play as El Cid by default, but you can employ him. If you want to play as El Cid, invite him to your court, grant him land, and use switch character menu to play as him.

Those who like to play Crusader Kings 3 in Iberian region will absolutely love it.

5. Outlaw King

IMDB

A Crusader Kings 3 fan will absolutely love the Outlaw King. It features the story of Scottish King who’s used cunning and bravery to defeat the much larger and better equipped occupying English army.

Story is basically like this: English declares forced vassalization war and wins. Then, Scottish vassals rebel against English. Just like the Crusader Kings 3.

6. Ironclad

IMDB

You’ll watch the Kings struggle against disloyal Barons.

They portray the King as a suppressor and an evil man. But as a Crusader Kings 3 player, we’ll all be siding with the King in Ironclad.

You dare to question my reign? And the lineage of Kings reign before me?
I am the blood, I am gods right hand, and you’ll never dictate to me how I’m to be a king!

Basically, you’ll be watching a movie about rebellious barons, vengeful King, excommunication, knights templar, and Danish mercenaries.

7. Robin Hood 2010

IMDB

Robin Hood is a legendary 13th/14th century heroic outlaw depicted in English folklore. It’s unknown if he was real or was just a legend.

In the 2010 Russel Crowe movie, Robin Hood and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village that’s going to lead an uprising against the crown itself.

Not a top-notch movie but at least it’s a high budget movie and the actors are top tier.

8. Arn: Tempelriddaren

IMDB

Here is the second and last Crusade focused movie of this page. It’s described as the Sweden’s answer to Kingdom of Heaven. With much lower budget of course.

Arn: Tempelriddaren is a movie about the son of a high-ranking Swedish nobleman, who is sent to the Holy Land as a knight templar.

I think you can find it on netflix.

9. Medieval

IMDB

Medieval is covering the story of fifteenth century Czech icon and warlord Jan Zizka, who defeated armies of the Teutonic Order and the Holy Roman Empire.

It’s far from the Crusader Kings 3 dates but is about the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia, and Teutonic Order. I mean, all present in Crusader Kings 3.

The film was released for digital and is available on Steam.

10. Braveheart

IMDB

Let’s end this with my favorite historical movie ever, the Braveheart. It’s pretty far from the start dates of Crusader Kings 3 but the movie is amazing!

Braveheart is set in late-13th century and is about a Scottish warrior who led the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England.

It’s a legendary cult classic movie and you should most definitely watch it. I’ll not spoil it any further.

Now that I think about it, there are literally no Byzantine related movies or TV series worth watching. How come it’s not represented in western movies? That’s pretty interesting.

Anyways, thanks for reading fellow Crusader Kings 3 players. Do let me know your favorite medieval movies via comment section and I’ll see you soon!
