Habitability is the adequacy of an environment for human living. Obviously as a sci-fi game, Stellaris adopted this as a parameter describing the planet living conditions. Stellaris guide now you’re reading will help you understand the impacts of planet habitability.
World / planet habitability in Stellaris can be between 0% to 100%. 0% is unlivable and the 100% is perfect living environment. Any habitability percentage below 100% will have penalties to pop amenities usage, pop upkeep, resources from jobs, and pop growth speed. That’s why you need to be very careful colonizing planets.
%80 and above is always ideal. Don’t think twice before colonizing. Any planet under %60 will be costly and not worth colonizing. Even %60 is debatable.
There are three climate categories in Stellaris, and those are dry, frozen, and wet. Each climate host three different planet types.
- Wet planets: Continental, ocean, and tropical.
- Dry planets: Arid, desert, and savannah.
- Frozen planets: Alpine, arctic, and tundra.
Your starting planet type will have %80, other worlds in the same planet group will have %60, the rest will have %20 habitability.
There are also unique planet types, their habitability is unaffected by your species preferred planet.
- Gaia world: %100 habitability.
- Ring segment: %100 habitability.
- Ecumenopolis: %100 habitability.
- Machine world: %100 habitability.
- Hive world: %100 habitability.
- Relic world: %80 habitability. (Can be turned into ecumenopolis without any tech or perk requirement.)
Is %60 Habitability Worth Colonizing in Stellaris?
Stellaris %60 Habitability is default for same group planets. For example, if you’re started in a continental world, ocean and tropical worlds will have %60 habitability in Stellaris. Those are all wet planets. Your main planet type (continental) in wet group will have 80% whereas the rest will have 60%. Other planet types like dry and frozen will have 20% default habitability. You can learn more about it right here Stellaris colonization guide. Colonization is a delicate process, one must proceed carefully.
Is Stellaris 60 habitability worth it? Should you colonize these planets? They’re worth colonizing if you have means to improve habitability.
%60 habitability will have following penalties:
- Pop amenities usage: +40%
- Pop upkeep: +40%
- Resources from jobs: -20%
- Pop growth speed: -20%
Sounds like a horrible deal, I know. However, if you couldn’t find enough planets with 80% habitability, you must suck it up and colonize the %60 habitability planets. Both for resources and overall pop growth.
Besides, you can get +10% habitability from gene clinics. Upgraded gene clinics will give +10% more netting total +20% habitability bonus.
There are also technologies you can research for extra habitability.
All in all, I usually wait for gene clinics technology for colonizing Stellaris %60 habitability worlds. Gene clinics and technologies will eventually turn %60 habitability planets to %100 habitability planets. It’s only a matter of time! They’re definitely worth colonizing.
