Hello and welcome to my latest Baldur’s Gate 3 guide! Today, I will be sharing my Baldur’s Gate 3 best thief build with you. Thieving is a huge aspect of Larian games, and it is super fun. So, in order to maximize this feature, you can use the BG3 thief build I am sharing.
It is especially good build for Baldur’s Gate 3 evil playthrough. Literally built for it.
Thieving is really OP in Baldur’s Gate 3. Just like in the Divinity Original Sin 2, the other Larian Studios game.
Let us start with the race. Wood elf have all the key traits and features for thieving. Such as keen senses, dark vision, fleet of foot, mask of the wild, bow proficiency and +2 dexterity bonus. That is why I would pick a wood elf for my thief character without a doubt.
Class is a no brainer. Rogue is definitely the best class for Baldur’s Gate 3 thief character. The class skill you need to choose for thieving is sleight of hand. It covers both lock-picking and pickpocketing. Stealth class skill is important too. Also don’t forget the stats. Rogue thief must prioritize dexterity of course. For both damage and thieving.
Our thief character can choose between urchin, charlatan, and criminal backgrounds. They are all equally good and helpful.
As for your group composition, you can double team with Astarion for maximum sneakiness. However, for more balanced party comp, I would get Lae’zel, Gale, and Shadowheart. Because one is a tank, other is wizard, and the last one is healer. But of course, this kind of optimization is not necessary. Baldur’s Gate 3 is not a super hard game, and any party composition can success.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Thieving Tips
Thieving in Baldur’s Gate 3 is really thrilling and rewarding. But you need a thief character first. Hey, don’t worry if your main character is not a thief. You can recruit Astarion and make him your groups master thief. He is really good at it after all.
BALDUR’S GATE 3 BEST PARTY COMPOSITION
Here is another thieving tip: You can save before pickpocketing something. If you fail the roll, you can roll back your save. This technique is called save-scumming and is a dishonest way to play this game. However, if you are having fun, everything is acceptable. Because it is a single-player game and cheating won’t affect anybody. Just don’t overdo it or you might get bored quickly.
Some quick tips for stealing / pickpocketing in BG3:
- After stealing something, transfer stolen goods to another party member who is far away from the crime scene.
- Let your companions talk and stall the unsuspected NPCs for easier pickpocketing.
- Save before stealing. (Save scum.)
- Steal and run away instantly.
- Shove items to steal them in empty corners. (Fixed I guess.)
- Cast invisibility after stealing.
- Stealing chance is mostly based on the items weight.
