Sports role playing games are hard to find though, that is a fact. Still, I have managed to compile a pretty handy selection of football RPGs.

Oh boy, I don’t even know how many hours I’ve spent playing Football Manager series throughout the years. It’s really an addictive game. So, don’t say you haven’t warned.
As the name indicates, Football Manager is a simulation game where you take the role of a club manager. As a manager, you will have many duties to perform. Such as making tactics, choosing squads, transferring players, managing trainings, and talking to press. All in all, it’s the most realistic football simulation game there is.
Its new version is released every year with extra features and updated squads. That will cost some money. However, you can still play the old version with updated squads mods. That way you don’t miss much except a couple of new functions.
Football RPG games started with Championship Manager series, but now, Football Manager carries the torch!
2. Football Story
Football Story takes you to a great adventure in the neighbor. Train, help people, and make a name for yourself. Your new life awaits!
Indie football adventure game Football Story have many RPG elements. Such as customizing your character, honing your skills and making choices.
You will encounter countless quests and events across your neighbor. Such as fixing bulbs, rescuing cats, making friends and doing mischief. But obviously your main purpose is becoming the best at football. Train, practice and participate in big games in order to achieve your dreams.
Character customization is also very detailed and realistic in Football Story. For example, you can simply go to your neighbor’s barbershop and get yourself a new haircut. You will also be able to visit clothing store and buy all kinds of cool outfit. Just make sure not to fill your wardrobe. Money will be very important in this journey for buying clothes, bicycle and cool stuff. Worry not, because there will be plenty of opportunities to make money in your neighbor.
In sum, it’s one of the most anticipated upcoming football RPG games of 2023.
3. Pocket League Story
Pocket League Story is a football simulation game where you can battle to the top. As a manager, you will be able to handpick players, and train them. Not only that, but also, it’s possible to sell merch, erect a gym, and build a stadium. But first, you need to grow your fanbase and snag the richest sponsors.
It’s more like an amateur football club owner simulation and role-playing game. So, matches are played automatically by your players. But you can give them instructions during the game.
4. Football Coach the Game
Here is an upcoming game that is developed in direct partnership with Robert Lewandowski. It’s going to be a multiplayer football management game where you can build your club and dream team.

5. Pixel Cup Soccer
Pixel Cup Soccer is a retro-style arcade game. It’s a fun game to play single-player as well as multiplayer. In single-player, you can create your team and lead it to glory, whereas multiplayer is all about tournaments and friendlies.
Play as general manager and the coach. That will basically put you in charge of everything in the club, just like a CEO position in business.
Unlike other football manager simulations, in pixel cup soccer, you actually play and control the matches. Some people like it that way. So, if that’s your thing, this game can be very satisfying.
6. Football School
Football schools lets you take the control of a sports academy in a small town. You can train your team, compete with other clubs, and climb the world ranking.
It is also possible to build facilities and headquarters, hire staff, do research, and promote your club. All in all, it’s more like a soccer club management sim with role playing elements.
7. Freestyle Football MMO RPG
Let’s continue with a football MMORPG with freestyle “Joga Bonito” gameplay. It’s a game that is focused on the aesthetic aspects of the sport, just like street football.
You can play single-player too. However, in essence it’s a MMORPG and fast paced 4v4 PVP mode is super fun.
Its grinding and pay2win aspects are kind of bad. Almost all MMORPGs have the same problems though.
8. Soccer Story
Soccer Story is a real deal adventure RPG, where every problem can be solved with your football talents. Of course, sometimes you need to use your brain just as much as your balls.
You will find yourself in a pixelated world full of goals, puzzles, and secrets. So, if you want to chill, and relax, go for it!
All in all, it’s a good, cute sports game to play. After all, it shares similar DNA with the Nintendo Switch’s cult hit Golf Story.
9. Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions
Do you like anime? If so, you’ll like this game because it’s a crossover between anime and football. You have to be really old to remember Captain Tsubasa though. Because 2018 – 2019 remake was not really popular among younger generation.
So, Captain Tsubasa Rise of New Champions is an arcade football game, topped with action, and epic moments. You can your build your dream eleven to play both offline and online!
Story modes are my favorite because you can experience the events from the anime.
10. New Star Manager
New Star Manager presents a football management experience like you’ve never seen.
You can be more than just player, be manager and the club owner simultaneously.

Graphics are outdated but on balance the game is a hidden gem. It’s also possibly the best Football Manager alternative there is. That’s why it’s worth a shot.
11. Soccer Manager 2022
Soccer Manager is a great Football Manager alternative and a role-playing game. It allows you to take complete control of a club and manage it with the database of 25,000 official FIFPRO licensed real players. The game stands out because it uses the real players instead of computer-generated ones, unlike many other football games.
As a manger, you will manage the players, tactic, and training. But the most fun part of this game is the transfer market.
You can also make decisions that will affect the club and build buildings like stadium and facilities.
12. FIFA 2023 (Career Mode)
We all played FIFA with our friends at some point, including you! But did you know that the FIFA series also have a single-player career mode?
FIFA career mode allows you to define your personality as a player, manage as some of football’s most famous names, and enjoy a new way to play your sessions. Starting as a young, amateur player, then rising ranks and possibly making a big transfer is quite satisfying.
Even though graphics are not really important in role playing games, you should know that the FIFA have the biggest budget, and best graphics.
13. We Are Football
Take over a small men’s or women’s team bring it into the big league. As a manager, trainer, and chairman, you will completely control your club. We are football is highly focused on the managerial tasks of club ownership.
Develop your club, players, and own managerial skills to make a name for yourself in football.
14. Football Drama
In Football Drama, you’re Rocco Galliano, the existentially troubled manager of a struggling football team. You must choose your own narrative, survive the drama, play turn-based football matches, and be successful. All in all, it is one of a kind unique game that crosses football management and compelling story.
15. Football, Tactics & Glory
Football, Tactics, and Glory is a turn-based tactical sports game. Its gameplay is pretty similar to famous science fiction game XCOM. What an interesting crossover.

It’s a deep strategy RPG game with many choices.
