1. Day of Dragons
Day of Dragons is an online creature survival sandbox game set in a large world with variety of biomes. All players start as a little dragon hatchling. To survive and grow old, a dragon must eat, drink, and fight whenever necessary.
The game does not end when you grow up to be a might dragon either. There are challenges you can take that will make your dragon grow even stronger and larger to become an alpha dragon of the species.
There are also clans, special abilities, nesting, and more in Day of Dragons. Basically, everything you can ask from a dragon game is in Day of Dragons.
It’s an online game with both PvE and PvP features. The game is available on Steam. For single-player only games, check the other dragon games below.
2. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous is one of the best isometric RPGs along with Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity Original Sin 2. It is party based and features an epic story in a fantasy setting.
The game has 39 classes to choose. But to be able to transform into a dragon, you need to be Dragon Disciple, which is a prestige class in Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous.
In order to unlock dragon class in Pathfinder, Dragon Disciple requirements:
- 1 level in a spontaneous arcane spell casting class. Which is either Sorcerer, Bard, or Eldritch Scion Magus.
- 5 points in knowledge arcana.
- Established draconic eldritch bloodline.
3. Divinity II
According to lore, dragons have been hunted, have been slain. But now the hour to strike back for dragons has come… Break free from the confines of the human body and take to the skies in this epic RPG adventure of Larian Studios.
You’ll be fighting as both human and dragon depending on the situation. Just like the legendary PS1 RPG The Legend of Dragoon, which is also in this list.
4. Divinity: Dragon Commander
Let’s continue with the second and last Larian Studios game on this best dragon games list. This one is called Divinity: Dragon Commander, and your mission in it is to reunite a broken empire and become the new god dragon-emperor.
In this game you are the Dragon commander. But you’ll also be ruling your empire, building armies, and leading them to your victory. In essence, this game is a mix between RTS and action genres.
5. Dragon Forge
Dragon Forge is a game in which you become a powerful dragon and automate massive factories. So, it’s both adventure and incremental base building game.
You start as a hatchling and turn into a wise mighty dragon. Then, explore and uncurse the huge fantasy world that is filled with engaging quests.
I recommend Dragon Forge because it offers a good single-player dragon game experience.
6. Spyro
Spyro is a video game series featuring a dragon main protagonist of the same name. The game is first introduced in 1998 for PlayStation classic. But you can play the 2019 remake called Spyro™ Reignited Trilogy, which is available on Steam.
Since, it’s a cartoonish fantasy game, you can easily tell the target audience is the younger generation. Still, all generations can enjoy some silly dragon adventure. Especially if you like dragons in particular.
7. Hoard
Up next another casual dragon game, but this one is a little bit darker. This game too lets you play as the dragon. However, HOARD is a little bit different, you are kinda evil in it.
HOARD is a strategy game with only one purpose, hoarding as much as gold you can! Dragons are attracted to gold after all.
So, as an evil dragon, you’ll be scaring villages, burning castles, stealing treasures, kidnapping princesses, and incinerating knights who dare to challenge you.
8. Skyrim
Skyrim is the best fantasy RPG game of all times. As you already know, it features the story of dragonborn. I know, dragonborn is not a real dragon. So, why did I include Skyrim to this list? Mods of course.
You can ride or transform into a dragon in Skyrim with mods.
With play as dragon mod, you can transform into a real dragon in modded skyrim. Same mod also let you ride one. It’s not the only mod either. There are many Skyrim mods with various features related to dragons. So, dive in!
9. The I of the Dragon
The I of the Dragon is another game about a heroic dragon. Here is the story: The world of Nimoais under the invasion of old and eternal evil. Only you can defeat the Daemon Skarborr and his minions.
There are three different dragons to choose, all with unique skillset:
- Annoth The Fire Breather.
- Barroth The Magician.
- Morrogh The Necromancer.
You start the game as a young, inexperienced dragon. As you deal with the increasingly tough and resilient minions of the enemy, you’ll develop combat abilities and eventually meet and conquer Skarborr himself.

Number ten goes to the most popular flash role playing game ever, How to Raise a Dragon. If you’ve never heard of it, maybe you should skip this one. Because it will be hard to play flash games in 2023. However, nostalgia lovers will love this one.
As the name states, it’s a game where you raise a dragon by playing as dragon. First, you start small and eat whatever you can find in the jungle to grow. Then you gain abilities and choose what sort of dragon you are going to be.
Even though it’s a short, basic game, re-playability of How to Raise a Dragon is huge.
11. The Legend of Dragoon
The Legend of Dragoon is one of the best PS1 RPG games ever. If you own an old retro PlayStation Classic, this is the game you should play. It’s an amazing RPG where you can transform into a dragon form and defeat your enemies.
Story: Dart is a young man who is attacked by a dragon during his travels. As he manages to return his village, Dart discovers that the village is destroyed, and his childhood friend has been taken prisoner. That’s the starting plot of this game which is filled with swords, magic, and dragons.
Even if you don’t own PS1, you can still play The Legend of Dragoon via PSX simulator on your PC.
12. Thanatos
Thanatos is the last game of this article, also an honorary mention. Because it’s the first game where you can play as dragon. It’s release dates way back to 1986.
Thanatos is an action game developed for ancient consoles such as ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC. You play as Thanatos the Destroyer in the game. Your main object is rescuing sorceress Eros from anEvil Lord of the underworld.
