When playing a fantasy RPG, I always choose mage class. Because I love casting spells… Why stick with a sword and a shield when you can have tons of magic spells, runes, and abilities? Being a wizard, mage, or a spellcaster is much more appealing to me when the other alternatives are just boring archer or warrior classes. You feel the same? Let me tell you about my ideal magic system an RPG should have. First of all, there should be a lot of spells, I mean, a LOT! Secondly, the spells should be elemental and counter each other in a balanced manner. Also, I like unique specializations / ascensions like blood-mage, necromancer, summoner, shapeshifter, warlock, and perhaps witch-hunter. What can I say? I love casting unique spells!

By the way, you should try mods too. Almost all high fantasy RPGs can be modded for extra spells, magic abilities, and even mage robes.

1. Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen

In most RPGs, especially ones with real time systems, magic feels like little more than glowing projectiles. Arrows and fireballs are indistinguishable. In Dragon’s Dogma magic feels like a primal and destructive force. Sure you can throw puny fireballs, but soon enough you can also summon pillars of fire from the earth, necromantic skulls that assault any enemy that dares come close to you, great maelstroms that obliterate anything in their path, etc.
