There are number of pets in Baldur’s Gate 3. They are cute and very useful too. Despite being in the early access, we can have at least 3 different, and awesome pets. Obviously not including conjurations and familiars. We will most definitely have more pets in the future. For future companions check Baldur’s Gate 3 possible origins.
Pets are humans’ best friends. I have a dog myself, in the real life of course. (Yorkshire terrier.) But in Baldur’s Gate 3, I took that pet ownership thing a little bit too far, I guess. Especially with the pet brain thing, which is too extreme, even for my taste.
List of Baldur’s Gate 3 pets:
1. Dog Scratch
Pet dog Scratch can be found at the forest and exact location is X:67 – Y:472. Watch recruiting pet dog scratch, step by step on the video.
We found Scratch mourning his dead owner, Gomwick. You can interact with Scratch there, after certain dialogue choices, and enough rolls you can invite Scratch to your camp. Animal handling skill and animal speaking spell might come in handy during these conversations, but they are not mandatory.
In camp, Scratch brings various items he found to player character. In addition to that, you can play catch with Scratch and pet it. Occasionally you should pet the dog for increasing your approval rating with companions.
Playing catch with scratch. Basically, all you have to do is placing the ball on your skill bar and use it to throw. Once you throw the ball, Scratch will fetch it and bring back to you for another round.
2. Owlbear Cub
Owlbear cub is also a possible pet in Baldur’s Gate 3. Mother owlbear and its cub can be found at owlbear nest inside the forest.
It doesn’t matter if you kill the mother owlbear or not. Either way, owlbear cub appears at the goblin camp later. Unless you kill the owlbear cub along with his mother… Also, you will find an owlbear egg at the cave bug egg does nothing at the moment. Perhaps on the later acts, egg will hatch.
To recruit owlbear, you need to head to the goblin camp and play chicken chasing with the goblins. You can either play the game and take owlbear with you or simply kill all the goblins and rescue owlbear. Then you can meet and bond with owlbear at your camp. But eventually after certain dialogues, owlbear will leave your camp.
I believe in the next acts, our little owlbear friend will return to camp as a full grown owlbear killing machine. What’s more, we might even ride an owlbear in Baldur’s Gate 3.
3. Pet Brain
This one is my favorite pet in Baldur’s Gate 3, the intellect devourer.
Gale says he saw that brainy thing nibbling at your ears in the beach after the crash. But we can’t know for sure if it was the one that bonded with us on the ship. In time we might see more of it, possibly with the full release. We might even be able to summon an intellect devourer as our mindflayer powers grow.
I really wish to see my beloved intellect devourer pet again. Especially in the camp if possible. Because it’s super cute and voice acting behind it absolutely amazing.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Pet Approval Bug
In Baldur’s Gate 3, every time you pet the dog, your approval rating with companions increase. In essence this is a early access bug, we can all agree on that. Nonetheless it’s not a game breaking one and worth exploiting if you ask me. That is why pet dog Scratch is number one on our list and you should definitely recruit it to your camp.
There is also another approval bug. Player can drink again and again from the Auntie Ethel’s cursed well. That will quickly and significantly increase your approval rating with Lae’zel.

One of the most fun aspects of Divinity Original Sin 2 was talking with the animals. Thanks to Larian we can talk with the animals in Baldur’s Gate 3 too but this time instead of using pet pal, we use animal speaking spell.
If you wish to start with animal speaking spell, you should choose the warlock class. Or instead of creating a warlock character, you can run to druids’ groove, and recruit Wyll before interacting with any animal in the game. And let the Wyll do the talking because he is a warlock and has Invocation: Speak with animal’s spell.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Ranger Pets
They are often referred as pets, but they are mere familiars. You can’t actually bond with them. Because summoned pets do not talk at all. Baldur’s Gate 3 classes and class mods pages might give you detailed information about other classes. But remember, ranger is the best pet class. So, these are ranger the pet summoning spells:
1. Ranger Familiars
Find familiar is level 1 conjuration spell for rangers. It allows you to gain the service of a familiar, a fey spirit that, takes an animal form you choose. All ranger familiars:
- Spider: Summon a familiar with the form and statistics of a spider. Its deadly bite can poison enemies.
- Raven: It can launch precise attacks.
- Rat: Its infectious bite can spread disease.
- Frog: Its skin discovered with dizzying toxins.
- Crab: Its sharp pincers can slow enemies.
- Cat: A super cute cat that can distract your enemies
2. Ranger Companions
Companion summoning spell can be unlocked by choosing Beast Master subclass as a ranger at level 3.
Summon companion: Gain a beast companion that accompanies you on your adventures and fights alongside you. With that spell you can conjure 6 different companions:
- Bear: Summon a bear that can draw the enemy’s attention and endure heavy attacks.
- Boar: It can sweep through the battlefield and knock enemies off their feet.
- Giant Spider: Summons a giant spider that can poison enemies and shoot webs from afar.
- Better Raven: Raven can cover great distances and launches precise attacks.
- Worg: Summons a worg.
- Wolf: It can inflict devastating wounds and knock enemies prone.
