Skyrim is filled with scary monsters. Such as hagraven, draugr, chaurus, ghosts, seekers, vampires, and spiders. But for die hard horror fans like you and I, these monsters are not scary enough! Lucky for us, mod creators have put a lot of work in creating scariest Skyrim ever existed. I made some research on this and made the compilation of 20 best horror mods of Skyrim Special Edition. I hope you enjoy them.
Once you install them, Skyrim will never be the same. There will be many new encounters, monsters, beasts, ghosts, dungeons, and cosmic horrors. You are in for a real-deal horror experience!
Oh man, just scrolling through these mod pictures gives me the creeps. I feel shivers down my spine, I am not easily scared either! So, get ready for a terrible dark Skyrim atmosphere.
Here we go, 20 best horror mods of Skyrim Special Edition:
Vigilant is one of my favorite Skyrim se horror mods. It hosts the dark story of Vigilants of Stendarr.
This mod includes long compelling story, armor sets, weapons, jewelry, creatures, NPCs, and more.
You can also get Vigilant Voiced mod. It adds custom voices to the NPCs of Vigilant. Note: 23 talented voice actors worked on this project.
So, get ready to face many Daedric horrors as a vigilant of Stendarr.
2. Molag Bal’s Inferno
Molag Bal’s Inferno is a large dungeon mod with quests, unique locations, bosses, rewards, and more. Full voiced new NPCs are added too.
Molag Bal – Daedric Prince of domination and enslavement of mortals. God of schemes.
It takes place in a hellish Daedric realm of Molag Bal. Obviously it is very hard to beat. You didn’t expect Molag Bals’s domain to go easy on you did you?
Glenmoril is a witch hunter quest mod. In that regard, its concept pretty similar to mod Vigilant. Both mods author is the same after all.
As a witch hunter, you will face many witches, witchcraft, monsters, and horrors. In order to help you face them, Glenmoril adds many new witch hunter equipment.
Those who like Skyrim SE horror quest mods will love this one.
4. Here There be Monsters – The Call of Cthulhu
Cthulhu themed Skyrim horror mods are always appreciated. Icy depths of Skyrim hides horrors far beyond comprehension. Even the dragons fear them. And now, like the dragons, the cosmic horrors have also awoken.
Mod features: Fully voiced NPCs, quests, unique items, and 9 different bosses.
Here There Be Monsters is actually a Skyrim horror mod series. If you like this one, better check out the other parts of this mod franchise.
- Here There Be Monsters. (First mod.)
- Troll hunter.
- Sign of Cipactli.
- Bones of the Coinchenn. (Coming Soon!)
Demonika is really a good horror mod. It might be disturbing even for big horror fans. It’s not lore-friendly either by the way.
There are 12 chapters in Demonika. Each chapter is unique and exciting. If you like demonic / satanic horror themes, I say go for it.
6. Survive the Night
It brings a darkness mechanic to Skyrim much similar to Don’t Starve.
Basically, the more you stay in dark areas, the more you become deranged. And eventually go insane!
This mod makes Skyrim nights much scarier. You will always look for light source and carry torches in order to avoid going mad.
There are 6 levels on insanity. On higher levels, spectral monsters spawn and attack you. It kind of reminds me of Berserk brand of sacrifice.
7. Rogue-Like Encounters
This mod adds rogue-like encounters to the world of Skyrim as stated in the mod-name. It makes Skyrim grimmer and more unpredictable by adding lots of powerful scary monsters.
I really like this game for its monster designs and horror elements. But it also makes Skyrim’s wilderness more immersive, which is great. Because Skyrim feels empty and dull after playing thousands of hours.
8. Skyrim Underground
Skyrim Underground mod introduces a brand-new tunnel system to the game. New underground dungeon system features 46 large and 26 small cells.
It is filled with cannibals, monsters, zombies, ghosts, and more.
Cleaning entire underground system will take a lot of time. So, you better prepare yourself for such a task beforehand.
This mod adds multiple wraith encounters to the Skyrim. There are different wraiths with different models.
Basically, it is just another fantastic monster mod to increase horror elements of Skyrim.
The mod is called Skinshifters – Forsworn Doppelgangers. Skin-walker, doppelganger, wendigo whatever you call it. It is really scary concept. If you know the lore, you know.
After installing this mod, doppelgangers will start wandering Skyrim, disguised as other NPCs. But inside this disguise, something monstrous hides.
If you see another NPC following a shinshifter out of curiosity, better follow them and intervene if necessary.
Clockwork is one of the most popular quest mods of Skyrim Special Edition. It has many horror elements in it. Those who downloaded it without knowing about it, really surprised.
Quest involves a castle high in the Velothi Mountains, lost to the world with the disappearance of Dwemer folk.
Once you found the Clockwork castle, you can call it home. But leaving it won’t be easy.
12. The Wheels of Lull
Enter the Sotha Sil with The Wheels of Lull and experience the strange side of Elder Scrolls lore.
This fully voiced DLC size mod adds quests, equipment, dungeons, and boss fights. Including horror elements, specifically Thalmor body horror… It is still giving me nightmares.
13. The Legend of Slender Man
For generations, the legend of Slender Man has been used in Falkreath to scare naughty children, teaching them not to disobey their parents.
Stories of a tall figure kidnapping children… It is only a legend, right? Right? Some says every legend has a grain of truth in it.
It is one of the Mihail mods which I am about to mention in the next headline.
14. Mihail Mods
Mihail have created many monster mods for Skyrim. His mods are mostly focused on creatures / animals.
It adds various monsters from SCP universe too. If that intrigues you, also check out my best SCP games list. You will find some spooky games there.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any Mihail monsters pack. You need to download them separately. Which is not so bad because that way you can get only the monster you really like.
15. He Follows
Another great Skyrim horror mod, inspired by the movie It Follows.
Mod simply adds a creature to Skyrim that will follow you forever! There will be no combat music when it finds you. Instead, you will hear distorted old music when it’s nearby.
It hungers for humans and hunts you until you are dead.
16. Gloomier Rustic Weathers
Skyrim’s weather is beautiful. It is not a good setting for horror elements, right? Well, no more clear beautiful sky for you!
Gloomier Rustic Weathers mods removes all clear sky weathers and replaces them with various cloudy and overcast weathers.
It highly improves the scare levels of other Skyrim SE horror mods.
17. Always Foggy
Always Foggy is a simple mod that brings Silent Hill like atmosphere to the world of Skyrim.
As a Silent Hill fan, I really like this mod. I am sure you will like it too.
18. Dungeon Sounds Overhaul
Music that will send shivers down your spine. It is great for creating a scary dungeon atmosphere.
SSE Dungeon Sounds Overhaul features 37 new sounds and music tracks to all dungeons. You will love the dark and creepy tones.
19. HP Lovecraft Books
H. P. Lovecraft is the godfather of fictional horror literature. Horror fans already know him well, including myself.
So, have you read his books? If not, you will love this mod, because it adds H.P. Lovecraft books to Skyrim.
All of Lovecraft stories are public domain and fare to use.
44 Lovecraft books can be found on the shelf in Farengar’s room in Dragonsreach.
20. The Horror Over Skyrim
This mod is a complete horror overhaul that effects races, perks, weather, music, spells, leveled NPCs, and items. Eventually making Skyrim a horror game.
Warning: This mod is super hard. Almost to the point unplayable. Unless you know when to fight, where to fight…
Don’t fight alone against the new horrors of Skyrim. Get yourself a reliable follower!
