Druid is probably the most versatile class in Baldur’s Gate 3 at the moment. It is a class that can cast spells, heal allies, and shapeshift into powerful beasts. Currently early access druids can shape-shift into 8 different animals. But this number will go up once the level cap extended.
Most important thing to remember about druid is, you cannot cast spells during a shapeshift. Therefore must make sure to use all your spells before shape-shifting into an animal. That would be the optimal thing to do.
Currently available BG3 druid animal shapes:
- Badger
- Bear
- Cat
- Spider
- Wolf
- Dire Raven
- Deep Rothe
- Aberrant Intellect Devourer
BG3 Druid Character Creation
Druid is a shape-shifting melee combat character. Therefore your should focus your main attribute wisdom, constitution, and little bit of dexterity.
Here is the base and the most important part of the druid build. BG3 druid character creation options.
Race
Wisdom is the druid spell casting ability. So, for maximum optimization, you need to choose a race that gives +1 wisdom to your character.
Those races would be wood elf, human, half-elf, and the gold dwarf.
Background
Lore-wise hermit and outlander backgrounds are the best choices for druid characters.
For usefulnes-wise I would pick hermit for medicine proficiency.
Cantrips
Thorn whip is the best cantrip you can get at level without a doubt. It has great damage and pulls enemies. Which is pretty strong against ranged enemies.
Second cantrip choice doesn’t really matter that much. Still, I would make my choice between shillelagh or produce flame.
Spells
Faerie fire is a great spell to cast before shapeshifting and engaging in combat. Healing word, entangle, and thunderwave spells are also great.
Subclass
Subclass choice will highly impact your game-play. So, take your time before you make a decision regarding your subclass.
Circle of the Land
Druids of this circle connect to powerful magic that flows through the earth and binds all living things together.
Additional cantrip and natural recovery which grants replenish expanded spell slots per day bonus action.
Circle of the Moon
Druids sworn to the moon draw on its mercurial nature to transform into massive creatures and primal elements.
Heavier focus on shapeshifting. You wanna be a polar bear and rip apart your enemies? Pick circle of the moon subclass.
Druid Mindflayer Power
Illithid spell of druid class is Aberrant Shape. It is the most interesting Illithid ability I have seen so far because it let’s you turn into a Mind Flayer brain monster.
Aberrant Shape:
Magically assume the shape of an intellect devourer that can deal Psychic damage. Your new form has 21 hit points.
Transformed intellect devourer has two spells. First one is synaptic discharge which deals 1d6+2 psychich damage at 6ft range. Second spell is devour intellect which stuns and deals 2d10 psychich damage to the creatures with below 4 intelligence score.
