Radar station is an intel building mainly used by the United Kingdom in Hearts of Iron IV. But as a play, you can pretty much build it with any country of choose. So, is radar really worth building in HOI4? The answer is simple. It depends on both the country you pick and the situation you in.
Hearts of Iron IV radar station description:
Radars allow you to gain intel on enemy troops in nearby states.
A higher radar level in a state increases the effective range of the radar.
Radar also provides the state with better detection of enemy air forces, giving your planes a better chance to engage them.
In addition, radar increases the detection of enemy fleets at sea.
I want to explain what radar does first. Let’s go step by step. First, move your curses to the radar you build to see the regions coverage. In 1936 start, Sussex radar grants 67% coverage in Southern England and 36% coverage in English Channel. That is a level 1 radar. Once you upgrade it, its coverage extends. %100 coverage means you have total radar control on that region. Now let us see the radar coverage bonuses in HOI4:
- Radar allows you to see all divisions/troops in the covered area. Which is somewhat useful for choosing the right spot for both naval invasions and paratroops.
- Reveals the enemy air force locations for your fighters in the covered region so that your fighters can engage better combats. This can change the tides of the air battle granting you superiority.
- Finally, it increases the detection of enemy fleets and can win you the unwinnable sea battles, supported your naval bombers of course.
When to Use Radar in Hearts of Iron IV?
Radars are really situational. For some countries it is not worth at all but for some it is really mandatory. I want to start with couple of examples.
United Kingdom expects some naval and air battles on the English Channel, right? In order to win these battles decisively, %100 radar coverage is necessary. Also, UK has a base in Mediterranean. By building a level 3 or 4 radar in Malta, you can simply destroy everything in Mediterranean Sea by using your fleet and planes. Malta is really in a strategic location that can be abused. Upgraded radar can give you coverage on Italy, Tripoli, and all the seas of Mediterranean to destroy Italy.
For Germany, you don’t need radars to conquer Poland, Benelux countries and France. But once you conquered the France and preparing for the invasion of UK, you might consider building some radars to gain coverage of English Channel. It will help you greatly to achieve naval and air superiority. I don’t think radars can help you on the Russian front because that frontline moves quickly away from radars.
France might also benefit from radars in northern France if the player decides to hold German troops on the Maginot and Benelux line. Also don’t forget to build some anti air for defense.
HOI4 DEFENDING AGAINST GERMANY
As for the Japan, radars are pretty much useless. Because China does not have any planes or navy. Maybe you can build one radar at Taiwan, because it reveals the Chinese troops. So that you can use naval invade on the most suitable port.
