There are total 8 races and their subraces exist in the current Baldur’s Gate 3 early access. Obviously, there are tons of races in DND that haven’t implemented to the game yet. However, you can always try Baldur’s Gate 3 race mods to add your favorite race to your game.
On this page you will find all Baldur’s Gate 3 races and sub races. In addition to that, I will be recommending classes, backgrounds, and alignments for each race.
Now let us begin our list of current available Baldur’s Gate 3 races:
Elf
With an ethereal countenance and long lifespans, elves are at home with nature’s power, flourishing in light and dark alike.
High Elf
Heirs of the mystical Feywild, high elves value magic in all its forms, using spells to spread beauty and elegance through Faerun. Moreover, even those who do not study spellcraft can manipulate the Weave.
Class: Best class for high elves would be wizard.
Background: Most definitely noble.
Wood Elf
Wood elves spend their reclusive lives in Faerun’s forests. Decades of training in archery and camouflage are enhanced by an otherworldly swiftness.
Best class: Ranger, cleric, and druid.
Tiefling
Descended from devils of the Nine Hells, tieflings face constant suspicion in Faerun. Thankfully, their arcane abilities make them natural survivors.
Alignment: Evil and neutral playthrougs recommended for Tieflings.
Best Backgrounds: Fighter, sage and acolyte.
Asmodeus Tiefling
Bound to Nessus, the deepest layer of the hells, these tieflings inherit the ability to wield fire and darkness from the archdevil Asmodeus’ infernal bloodline. Asmodeus tieflings wield fire and darkness like the notorious archdevil himself.
Class: Best Asmodeus tiefling class would be warlock.
Mephistopheles Tiefling
Descended from the archdevil Mephistopheles, these tieflings are gifted with a particular affinity for arcane magic. Mephistopheles tieflings draw power from Cania, the archdevil’s glacial realm, and have a particular affinity for arcane magic.
Class: Warlock and wizard.
Zariel Tiefling
Tieflings bound to Zariel possess the strength meant for war. Tieflings from Zariel’s bloodline are empowered with martial strength, and can channel searing flame to punish their enemies.
Class: Warlock and wizard.
Drow
The Elves of the underdark, drow hav e been fighting a massive civil war since the goddess Lolth has severed herself from the elvish pantheon, a betrayal scarring every generation that followed. Drow city-states struggle with one another for dominance, but the true war is between the cultists who serve Lolth and those who resist the goddess’s corruption.
Loth Sworn Drow
Raised by Lolth’s cult in the city of Menzoberranzan, these drow extol the virtues of their corrupt and merciless goddess. Lolth marks her followers with bright red eyes so the UNDERDARK will learn to faer drow on sight.

Seldarine Drow
Drow are the result of an ancient schism between the elven deities Corellon Larethian and Lolth. The latter’s treachery drove the drow into the Underdark, where they splintered into warring factions. Seldarine drow can be found seeking allies from all over Faerun, aiming to settle their conflict with Lolth and each other by any means necessary.
- Best Class: Fighter and rogue.
- Alignment: Evil and neutral.
Human
The most common face to see in Faerun, humans are known for their tenacity, creativity, and endless capacity for growth. Humans often face stiff competition from long lived races, but hold their own okay.
Humans are the most versatile race in Baldur’s Gate 3. They do well with all classes and backgrounds. For that reason you can be a good, evil, or neutral character without breaking immersion.
Githyanki
Githyanki are pearless warriors from Astral Plane, known for their legendary silver blades and red dragon mounts. They seek the total destruction of mind flayers, whose ancient empire enslaved the githyanki for millennia.
Githyanki recommendations:
- Class: Fighter and ranger classes would be best choice for the Githyanki race. Specifically eldritch knight is best subclass for them.
- Background: Soldier and outlander.
- Alignment: Evil or neutral.
Dwarf
Durable and unyielding as their homes of stone, dwarves are some of the finest warriors, miners and smiths of Faerun.
Gold Dwarf
Gold dwarves are known for their confidence and keen intuition. The culture of their deep kingdom values family, ritual, and fine craftsmanship. They are also called hill dwarves and their resilience has kept a massive kingdom in the south intact for centuries.
Best Class: Fighter
Shield Dwarf
Shield dwarves survived a long fall from grace, surrendering many of their ancient kingdoms in wars with goblins and orcs. These losses have lead to a cynical mindset, yet shield dwarves will endure anything to restore their ancestral homelands. Also called mountain dwarves, thrive in rugged terrain, standing taller than their hill dwarf cousins. Their kingdoms are bastion of strength in northern Faerun.
Best Class: Cleric and fighter.
Half Elf
Half elves inherit blessings from both their parents, but at the price of never quite fitting in. Curious, ambitious, and versatile, half elves are welcome everywhere yet struggle to stay for long.
High Half Elf
A touch of the feywild remain in half-elves with this bloodline, and even those untrained in magic possess a hint of wild power.
A step further from the Feywild than their high elf parents, these half elves still hold magical spark. They mature faster than their brethren, but only live a few decades longer than humans.
Class: Wizard and warlock.
Wood Half Elf
Like their wood elf parent, these half elves have a quickened stride and eye for stealth. Yet many break away from isolation in Faerun’s forests to explore the rest of the realms.
Even a generation apart, forest blood breeds true. These half eves retain their parent’s gift for speed, but tend to wander rather than staying in hidden enclaves.
Class: Ranger and rogue.
Drow Half Elf
Most half drow results from liaisons between seldarine drow and surfacers. While half-drow inherit a few magical gifts, they aren’t usually raisend in the underdark.
To be half drow is to wrestle with a violent and complicated legacy. Cleverness and tenacity serve them well, for they are caught between two very different worlds.
Class: Warlock and rogue.
Halfling
Small yet capable, halflings prefer the comforts of home and hearth, but their natural luck and dexterity makes them fine adventurers.
Lightfoot Halfling
Lightfoot halflings are stealthy but social, traveling all over Faerun to make names for themselves.
Named for their inclination to stealth, lightfoot halflings are nonetheless happy in the spotlight. They enjoy travel, and many have made names for themselves across Faerun.
Class: Warlock.
Strongheart Halfling
Legends say dwarven blood gave stronghearts their hardiness. Resistant to poison and wellsprings of endurance, these halflings easily hold their own.
Class: Fighter, rogue and ranger.
