Tip number one, the bard should be your groups main talker. Because bard have vast charisma points and multiple speech check bonuses. Persuasion or intimidation, bard class have whatever it takes for both.
Second tip is focusing on support. Bard is a support character in both tabletop, d&d 5e, and Baldur’s Gate 3. Therefore all its skills and abilities revolves around supporting other characters in the group. So, you should focus on the support skills and optimize your group according to that. Otherwise your bard might end up being useless. We don’t want that.

BG3 Bard Character Creation
Bard character creation in Baldur’s Gate 3 is really simple actually. You should simply focus on charisma, and supportive abilities.

Race
Charisma is the primary attribute of a bard. Therefore the classes with +2 charisma bonus are the best choice. For the record, those classes are half-elf and tiefling.
Background
Entertainer is the best background choice for a bard without a doubt. This background gives acrobatics and performance proficiencies. Performance proficiency is a charisma skill and goes perfectly with bard class.
Cantrips
Vicious mockery and true strike would be the optimal choice for starters. For damage, vicious mockery is great. Whereas true strike is a support skill. It is also great because bard is kind of a support character.
Spells
Cure wounds and healing words are a must because Bard is a support character. Tasha’s hideous laughter is also highly effective enchantment spell that renders your enemies useless. Finally your fourth and the last pick should be the dissonant whispers as it deals really high damage.

It doesn’t really change anything at all. Besides you can find various instruments during your journey. They are all usable and have the same effect. Except their music of course. 🙂

Illithid spell of bard class is Stage Fright. It is one of the most effective mindflayer power in the game. Let us examine it.

Drown your enemies in an overwhelming fear of failure. They receive Disadvantage on Attack Rolls and take damage each time they miss an Attack Roll.
