bg3 killing commander zhalk

Let’s get straight to the point. Can You Kill Commander Zhalk in BG3? Is he killable or just part of the tutorial cinematic?

You can actually kill Commander Zhalk in BG3. It won’t be easy though. You need every little power boost you can get. Including Shadowheart, Lae’zel, and the little brain thing called US. Also don’t forget to save before entering the combat chamber. Because it will take couple of attempts to kill him for sure.

BALDUR’S GATE 3 VILLAINS

How to kill Commander Zhalk? There are multiple tactics you can choose among. My favorite is cheesing with explosive barrels.

You need not to attack him right away. He is already busy with the mindflayer. So, focus on taking a good position and clearing little ones first. You can deal with him later. Also, mindflayer is weaker than Zhalk. In order to prolong their fight, you can debuff Zhalk occasionally, or heal the mindflayer.

There are stairs nearby where he is fighting. Take the high ground and spam projectiles for maximum damage.

All in all, you can kill Commander Zhalk, without even cheating. It’s worth doing so because killing him gives great XP and you can loot his dead body for unique flaming sword.

Who is Commander Zhalk?

Commander Zhalk is a cambion serving archdevil Zariel, Archduchess of Avernus.

He is an avoidable boss in the Nautiloid. You don’t necessarily fight and can pass through without engaging. However, he gives huge amount of XP and drops Everburn Blade if you kill him. But remember, he is not easy to kill.

He is a Baldur’s Gate 3 boss after all.

Some quotes from Commander Zhalk:

Take this ship, or Zariel will have your head!

Kill them, or your spine is mine.

Split these intruders open! Avernus is ours.

You will want to kill him because he is carrying an amazing two-handed blade. Somethings worth the hassle. Also, the XP boost is huge and thanks to that you can reach the level cap way sooner in your playthrough.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Everburn Blade

Evenburn Blade is probably the best two-handed sword in Baldur’s Gate 3. There is only one way of getting it, that is killing Commander Zhalk in the nautolid.

Everburn Blade:
Uncommon Magic Weapon
6~19 Damage / 2d6+3 Slashing, +1d4 Fire
Ever-burning. An arcane flame that cannot be quenched.
Silent flames surge the length of the blade as soon as it clears the scabbard.

Killing Commander Zhalk in the tutorial is a hard task. Thus, it’s highly rewarding. With Everburn Blade your progress will be much easier in BG3. Besides, the sword is one of the Baldur’s Gate 3 treasures. It’s definitely worth getting. So, make sure to kill Commander Zhalk in your next playthrough!
