They say most video games appeal to male fantasy! Evidently, that was the case up until recent years. Now that is quickly changing, and video games start appealing female fantasy too!

1. Portal Franchise
Portal is one of the most popular female protagonist games of all times. Though we don’t get to see her much because this is a first person-view game. Also, she does not speak at all.
Chell is the silent protagonist of the Portal video game series. Not much is known about her. Except her being the daughter of an employee at Aperture Science Laboratories.

Life is Strange is an award-winning episodic adventure video game franchise. Story revolves around time travel elements. Such as rewinding time, affecting past, present and future.
Main protagonist is Max Caulfield, a photography senior who discovers she can rewind time. She suddenly develops this ability to save her friend Chloe Price. Then the pair find themselves investigating the mysterious disappearance of fellow student Rachel Amber. A killer on the loose.

Tomb Raider is a media franchise that appears in movies, tv series, comics, and gaming industry. Franchise focuses on the fictional archaeologist Lara Croft, also as known as the Tomb Raider, who travels around the world searching for artefacts.

4. Half Life Alyx
Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. So, since it’s a VR game, you can skip it if you don’t have the equipment to play.
Play as Alyx Vance, humanity’s only chance for survival. The game is set in between the events of Half-Life 1 and 2. We already know Gordon’s story. Now it’s time to reveal Alyx’s.
Her face modeled after actress Jamil Mullen. However, she is voiced by another actress named Ozioma Akagha in Half Life Alyx.

GRIS is an experience with almost no text and very simple controls. One can say that it’s more of an art than just a game.

Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality.

Control is a third-erson action-adventure game that won over 80 awards.
The game itself gives strong X-Files and SCP vibes. Main character Jesse Faden is the director of Federal Bureau of Control. A secret agency tasked with containing and studying paranormal phenomena.
Courtney Hope is the model and voice actress of female protagonist Jesse Faden.
7. Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn award-winning action RPG that must be played. Regardless of the gender of main character. Because it’s so good.
In story, you experience Aloy’s legendary quest to unravel the mysteries of a future Earth ruled by Machines.
She is modeled after Dutch actress Hannah Hoekstra voiced by American actress Ashly Burch.
8. A Plague Tale: Innocence
Let’s continue with another masterpiece with an amazing story. It’s a grim tale set in medieval times during the black plague.
In Plague Tale: Innocence, you get to experience the story of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo.

9. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice presents a warrior’s brutal journey into myth and madness. Game is set in the Viking age, where a Celtic warrior embarks on a Conan like quest.
Senua is voiced by actress Melina Juergens. She was her model and motion capture actor as well.
By the way, sequel of the game called Hellblade 2 is in development and expected to be released in 2023.

Praey for the Gods is a boss hunting game in an open world frozen Nordic land setting. Basically, it’s Shadow of Colossus in frozen lands. So, if you liked it, you will also like Praey for the Gods.
Our main character is a strong gal. According to imdb, she is voiced by actress Hannah Risser-Sperry.

Bayonetta is an over-the-top stylish action game, similar to the Devil May Cry series. It became a classic game when it was first released in 2009. But it was a console exclusive game up until 2017 PC remake version.
Main protagonist Bayonetta is the last survivor of an ancient witch clan who keep the balance between light, dark and chaos. Basically, it’s a pure action game with epic weapons, enemies, and bosses.

NieR: Automata is an action game created by Square Enix. Game tells the story of androids and their battle in the dystopian future.
Main character is a female android called 2B. She is voiced by famous Japanese anime voice actress Yui Ishikawa.

Transistor is a sci-fi-themed action RPG. A great game. After all, it’s developed and published by Supergiant Games, creators of Bastion.
Main character Red is voiced by Ashley Barrett and Kristin Wilson.

Alien: Isolation is one of the greatest movie adaption video games. It’s set in 15 years after the events of 1979 Alien movie. Alien Isolation is a survival horror game. In which, you try to hide, and escape from an alien inside a space station.
You’ll play as Ellen Ripley’s daughter Amanda Ripley. Basically, she experiences the horrors and dangers her mother lived.
Amanda Ripley is modeled after actress Kezia Burrows and voiced by another actress Andrea Deck.

Resident Evil franchise featured many female protagonists throughout the years. Some are direct main characters whereas some only available in co-op mode.

Odyssey is the first Assassin’s Creed game where player have a choice over main characters gender. You can choose between two main characters, Kassandra or Alexios. Even though story is same for both, many things about characters are different. Such as reactions, some dialogues, takes on different situations, etc.
Kassandra voiced by Greek American actress Melissanthi Mahut. She was the best choice for this job because of her Greek background. Overall, her work end up being perfect.
I hope newer Assassin’s Creed games will have same option to play with female main characters.
18. Dreamfall Chapters
Dreamfall Chapters is a story-driven 3D adventure about choice and consequences. It’s set in parallel worlds, and you can jump between them in order to seek answers. One world is a cyberpunk vision of the future whereas other one is a magical fantasy realm. All in all, it’s an amazing bridge!
Main character is Zoë Castillo who had uncovered a criminal conspiracy aimed to enslave people’s dreams.
She is voiced by famous British actress and writer, Charlotte Ritchie.
19. Syberia: The World Before
Syberia: The World Before features a magical journey through the enchanting cities of eastern Europe, both in 1937 and 2004. It’s a point & click puzzle adventure game with rich story.
The game follows two timelines with two characters:

- Emilie Rault: Voiced by Dana Roze.
20. Succubus
In this game, you play as a succubus, a literal semen demon. Become a demonic priestess of lust and use unique skills to take revenge on your enemies.
I’m not sure if I need to tell this but you should know that this game is violent, +18, and graphic. So, don’t say you haven’t been warned.
