Should You Play Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 Before 3?

baldur's gate 1 2 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 released and now everyone wonders, should you play Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 before 3? It is a fair question because in some cases, playing the latest game before the prequels might be boring. However, it is not the case with Baldur’s Gate series.

BEST BALDUR’S GATE GAMES

Story is not the same and Baldur’s Gate 3 is not a sequel. Therefore, it is not necessary to play Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 before playing the third game. However, I would highly suggest you to play these cult classic video games no matter what. Because they are absolutely amazing and will enhance your Baldur’s Gate 3 experience. Even though they aren’t related in terms of storyline. I know BG1 and BG2 are really old games. However, in 2013 they are polished and released under the name of enhanced editions. Which is very nicely polished in my opinion.

Do I need to play Baldur’s gate 1 and 2 to be able to enjoy Baldur’s gate 3? That is not necessary. You don’t have to play BG1 and BG2 to enjoy BG3. However, they are pretty good Baldur’s Gate games and must be played someday.

All in all, you definitely should play Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 before 3. Not because they are important for the storyline. But because they are really good cult games in the history of isometric RPG. Which Baldur’s gate should I play? All of them of course. Either follow 1-2-3 or 3-1-2.

Baldur’s Gate 1 vs 2    BG2 VS BG3

IS Baldur’s Gate 3 a Direct Sequel?

Nope, Baldur’s Gate 3 is not a direct sequel. Not even close. Let me tell you why. Because Baldur’s Gate 3 takes place in 100 years after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3.

BG3 set about 100 years after BG2.

Almost all characters from BG2 are dead in BG3. Therefore, there is no connection between any of the stories. Which is good for new Baldur’s Gate players. However, some of the old BG1 & BG2 players might be a little upset about this. But one must understand, you can’t make a sequel after 20 years. That would be the worst marketing decision. This reminds me of Witcher 3. It is also connected to old games but not entirely. Therefore, making it enjoyable for everyone. Both newcomers and oldies.

Shortly, do play Baldur’s Gate 1&2 Enhanced Editions when you have the time. So, thank you for tuning in guys. Make sure to leave a comment below and I will se you again soon. Take care of yourself and have fun!
