Worst Things About Baldur’s Gate 3

8 problems of Baldur's Gate 3 early access. Let's discuss the bad aspects of this game.

bg3 problems

Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of my favorite RPGs of all times. Larian did create a masterpiece. I really love this game. However, it is not perfect. There are some things that makes me frustrated while playing Baldur’s Gate 3. So, let’s discuss the worst things about Baldur’s Gate 3.

IS BALDUR’S GATE 3 WORTH

There are 8 downsides / cons of playing BG3 at the moment. Could they be fixed in the future? Some can, but I wouldn’t be so sure.

Anyway, list of the things I hate about Baldur’s Gate 3 starts here. I am sure you can relate most of them.

1. Never-ending Early Access

First one is really obvious. The never-ending early access phase…

Baldur’s Gate 3 released on 6 October 2020. It’s been more than two years. Still the game in the early access. It should have been over by now.

There are some speculations about Baldur’s Gate 3 full release date. However, we can’t really be sure because developers like to delay.

I have played tens of different characters in Baldur’s Gate 3. To be honest, I am getting tired of it now. In fact, now I have an early access fatigue.

Worst thing about it is that there is no Baldur’s Gate roadmap to follow. Which is highly frustrating.

All in all, currently the worst thing about Baldur’s Gate 3 is never-ending early access. Let’s hope it ends soon.

2. Update Save Compatibility

Whenever there is a new update, all our save-games become unplayable. Which is really frustrating.

It is called Baldur’s Gate 3 greyed out save issue. Also as known as BG3 deprecated version. It is fixable yet frustrating.

After a major update, your save files become unplayable. You can still continue to play your save files by reverting back the game version. But why should I play older version when there is a new update?

10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY BG3

I don’t know how many new saves I had to create because of new update. Maybe I should take a break until the full release.

3. Party limit (4 Character)

There are currently 5 origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3. Meaning 5 possible companions. That makes 6 people including the custom player characters. However, Baldur’s Gate 3 party limit is limited to 4 members.

Who decided that? I want to travel with all 5 companions. I don’t want to miss any companion dialogue, quest, and interaction. What’s the harm in controlling 6 characters in BG3?

Luckily, we can unlock group limit by using Baldur’s Gate 3 party size extender.

4. Missing Classes / Races

Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on Forgotten Realms D&D 5e. Well, D&D 5e have tons of races and classes in it. However, Baldur’s Gate 3 have only implemented a handful of them.

Maybe more classes / races will be available the future. Who knows? But currently BG3 feels like an empty shell D&D game.

In the meantime, you can check out the BG3 mods related to races / classes:

5. Optimization

Does Baldur’s Gate 3 have bad optimization and performance issues? It is debatable. We can’t conclude anything because everyone says something different regarding the BG3 optimization.

Larian Studios is using custom Baldur’s Gate 3 game engine. The engine itself is great. Anyone who played Divinity Original Sin 2 can say the same. Because both games are developed by the same Divinity engine.

However, Divinity engine is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3. Some PCs having a trouble playing BG3. Whereas some don’t.

If you are having any optimization problem, try switching between DirectX 11 and Vulkan. In some instances, optimization skyrockets. I can’t guarantee it but most of the time it solves the issue.

6. Bugs

Since Baldur’s Gate 3 is an early access game, it is pretty buggy. However, Larian is working hard and reviewing all bug submits. Eventually they will all be fixed.

If you encounter any of these bugs, especially crashes, please visit our Baldur’s Gate 3 crash fix page. Some BG3 errors can be fixed easily.

But some bugs are game-breaking and corrupts the save file. They are the worst.

7. Obnoxious Companions

Who else hates BG3 companions? Especially Shadowheart… Why did they make her so obnoxious? I have an idea.

Larian probably did it for character development. Companions start as resentful, hateful, and obnoxious only to become friendlier as the time goes on. Good thought but implemented poorly in my opinion. Because I can’t stand them.

BALDUR’S GATE 3 FUTURE COMPANIONS

Let’s hope new companions will be friendlier. Afterall, a companion must be someone to rely on.

8. Slow AI Combat

Sometimes it takes forever for AI to complete its turn. Especially if you are in a large combat.

Turn-based combat is okay. But sometimes AI gets bugged. AI should not waste any time in order to enjoy turn-based combat.

That made it 8 Baldur’s Gate 3. I can’t think of any other problem at the moment. If anything comes up, I will be sure to update this article.

Well other than the things I have mentioned above, the Baldur’s Gate 3 is great! It will be much better in the full release though.
